Mohamed Salah Scores First European Goal for Trabzonspor in 4-2 Win Over KuPS
Mohamed Salah opened his European scoring account for Trabzonspor on Thursday, helping the Turkish side beat KuPS Kuopio 4-2 in Finland and begin their UEFA Conference League campaign with three points.
KuPS coach Miika Nuutinen had said before the match that his team had prepared a plan to limit Salah’s influence. The hosts made an energetic start on the artificial surface at Tammelan Stadion, but Trabzonspor soon found space through the middle and began to dictate the attacking transitions.
Paul Onuachu gave the visitors the lead, finishing from close range after a precise ball was played across the penalty area. The goal rewarded Trabzonspor’s growing control and forced KuPS to respond while also guarding against the pace and movement of the Turkish side’s forwards.
Salah then doubled the advantage with a familiar move. Cutting in from the right, he created room to shoot and curled a left-footed effort beyond the goalkeeper into the far corner. The finish marked his first goal in European competition for Trabzonspor and dealt a significant blow to KuPS’s attempt to contain him.
Trabzonspor continued to stretch their lead after the break. Edin Višća made it 3-0 by turning in a delivery from Salah, whose contribution again proved decisive in the final third. Enis Destan completed a swift counterattack to take the score to 4-0, leaving the visitors firmly in control.
KuPS avoided a heavier defeat during the final 15 minutes, when Trabzonspor began replacing some of their key starters. Jonathan Muzinga and Petteri Pennanen scored late goals for the Finnish side, reducing the margin to 4-2. The comeback did not change the result: Trabzonspor had already established a decisive lead.
The two late strikes offered KuPS some consolation after a difficult spell in which Trabzonspor’s movement and finishing repeatedly exposed the home defence. For the visitors, the closing minutes served as a reminder that a commanding performance can still become less comfortable if concentration slips.
Salah’s goal was a notable moment, but Trabzonspor’s win was built on more than one player’s contribution. Onuachu supplied the early breakthrough, Višća converted a chance created by Salah, and Destan finished a fast attack. That spread of attacking involvement made it harder for KuPS to focus exclusively on stopping the Egyptian forward.
The result also reflected the value of turning control into goals. Trabzonspor did not need to dominate every moment of the opening spell; once they began using central transition lanes effectively, they created opportunities that shifted the match in their favour. KuPS’s initial energy was not enough to prevent the visitors from taking command.
For KuPS, the first-half response to going behind was particularly important. Chasing the game against a side capable of breaking quickly meant leaving space for Trabzonspor’s attackers. The counterattack that produced the fourth goal illustrated the risks of committing players forward while trying to recover a substantial deficit.
Trabzonspor will take encouragement from the balance of their performance: they scored through different types of attacking moves, made effective use of Salah’s ability to cut inside, and carried a four-goal advantage into the closing stages. The two concessions, however, will give the team areas to review, especially their defensive focus after making substitutions.
An opening-match victory provides Trabzonspor with an ideal start to their European campaign and an early three-point return. Salah’s first continental goal for the club adds another positive, while the performances of Onuachu, Višća and Destan showed the range of options available in attack.
KuPS, meanwhile, can take some confidence from their late response, even though the final score underlined the scale of the challenge they faced. Trabzonspor’s four-goal spell had already decided the contest, and the Finnish side’s late goals could not undo the damage.
In the end, Nuutinen’s plan was unable to prevent Salah from making his mark or Trabzonspor from finding a route through the defence. The visitors left Finland with a 4-2 win, a strong start in Europe and evidence that their attack can threaten opponents in several different ways.
