Fenerbahçe Prepare January Approach for Sunderland Star Chemsdine Talbi

Fenerbahçe are reportedly considering a January move for Sunderland winger Chemsdine Talbi as İsmail Kartal looks to strengthen his attacking options ahead of the second half of the season. The Turkish club have identified the 21-year-old as one of their leading recruitment targets and are expected to assess the possibility of opening negotiations when the winter transfer window begins.

Talbi has emerged as one of Sunderland’s most promising young players after producing a series of energetic and influential performances in England. His pace, confidence in possession and ability to attack defenders directly have attracted interest from clubs across Europe. Fenerbahçe now appear ready to explore whether a deal can be reached for the highly rated wide player.

Fenerbahçe seek greater attacking depth

Kartal is believed to be looking for more speed, creativity and flexibility in the wide areas. Fenerbahçe have experienced changes to their attacking structure, while injuries and the demands of competing on several fronts have increased the need for reliable squad depth.

Talbi fits that profile particularly well. Although the Belgian-born winger is most comfortable on the right flank, he can also operate from the opposite side or move into more central attacking positions. That versatility would give Fenerbahçe additional tactical options, especially in matches where they need to break down compact defensive systems.

The young forward’s most noticeable quality is his acceleration. Talbi can quickly turn defensive situations into attacking opportunities, using his first few steps to create separation from opponents. He is also comfortable receiving the ball under pressure and attempting to progress play rather than simply recycling possession.

A direct winger with room to develop

Talbi’s style is built around positive decision-making. He regularly looks to take on full-backs in one-on-one situations and can carry the ball over long distances when space opens in front of him. His close control enables him to operate in crowded areas, while his willingness to attack the penalty area adds another dimension to his game.

For Fenerbahçe, that directness could be especially valuable. The club often face opponents who defend deep and attempt to limit space between the lines. A winger capable of stretching the pitch, beating a marker and delivering the ball from advanced positions could help create openings in those difficult fixtures.

At 21, Talbi would also represent more than a short-term solution. Fenerbahçe are understood to view him as a player with significant development potential, capable of making an immediate contribution while continuing to improve through regular top-level football.

Sunderland unlikely to welcome a mid-season exit

Any transfer will be complicated by Sunderland’s position. The Championship club see Talbi as an important part of their long-term plans and are unlikely to approve his departure without receiving a substantial offer. A move in January would also deprive Sunderland of an attacking player during a crucial period of the campaign.

The English side therefore hold considerable negotiating power. Unless Fenerbahçe make an offer that reflects Talbi’s potential and current importance, Sunderland may prefer to retain him until the end of the season. The player’s contract situation, Sunderland’s competitive objectives and the size of any proposed fee will all influence the discussions.

Fenerbahçe may also need to consider whether a permanent transfer is realistic or whether an initial loan agreement could provide a more practical route. A loan with an option or obligation to buy might allow both clubs to reduce their immediate financial risk, although Sunderland would still have little reason to accept modest terms.

Pressure from the Süper Lig title race

Fenerbahçe’s interest is also connected to the intensity of the domestic title race. Galatasaray and Beşiktaş are expected to remain serious competitors, meaning the club cannot afford to enter the second half of the season with weaknesses in key positions.

Kartal is believed to have encouraged the board to move quickly rather than wait until the final days of the transfer window. An early approach could give Fenerbahçe time to negotiate properly and avoid a rushed decision if several clubs enter the race for Talbi.

The winger’s arrival would not automatically guarantee a starting place. Fenerbahçe already possess experienced attacking players, and Talbi would need to adapt to a new league, a different tactical environment and the considerable expectations surrounding one of Turkey’s biggest clubs. Nevertheless, his physical and technical qualities could allow him to compete for a regular role.

How Talbi could be used in Turkey

In Kartal’s preferred high-tempo approach, Talbi could be asked to remain wide during the build-up before cutting inside when the ball reaches the final third. His speed would also make him useful in transitions, particularly when Fenerbahçe win possession and can attack an unsettled defence.

Another option would be to use him as an impact substitute. Against tired opponents, Talbi’s acceleration and willingness to take risks could change the rhythm of a match. This role may be particularly important during a demanding schedule involving league fixtures, cup matches and European competition.

His defensive contribution will also be closely assessed. To succeed in a system based on pressing and quick recoveries, Talbi would need to show discipline when tracking runners and closing down defenders. His attacking instincts are already attracting attention, but tactical consistency could determine how quickly he becomes a trusted member of the team.

A transfer that may require patience

Despite the growing interest, there is no indication that an agreement has been reached. Fenerbahçe are still expected to evaluate the financial conditions of a potential deal before presenting a formal proposal. Sunderland’s valuation could prove the central obstacle, particularly if the English club believe Talbi’s market value will continue to rise.

The coming weeks may therefore be crucial. Fenerbahçe must decide whether to make an ambitious offer immediately or explore alternative targets in case Sunderland refuse to negotiate. Talbi, meanwhile, is likely to remain focused on maintaining his form and continuing his progress at the Stadium of Light.

If Fenerbahçe do succeed, the transfer would underline their strategy of combining experienced players with high-potential young talent. Talbi’s pace, versatility and attacking courage make him an attractive option, but securing his signature will require both a convincing sporting plan and a financial package capable of changing Sunderland’s position.
