Galatasaray Target Virgil van Dijk as Defensive Problems Intensify
Galatasaray are reportedly considering a renewed attempt to sign Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk, placing the Dutch centre-back near the top of their transfer plans ahead of the January window. The Istanbul club want an experienced defensive leader after a difficult start to the season exposed serious problems at the back.
Galatasaray have conceded 27 goals in 13 matches across all competitions. Head coach Okan Buruk has therefore asked the club’s leadership to strengthen the squad during the winter market, with central defence and right-back identified as priority positions. After discussing the team’s needs with president Dursun Özbek, the manager is understood to be seeking reinforcements capable of making an immediate impact.
Van Dijk’s contract situation could make him an appealing target. The 35-year-old is reportedly in the final year of his Liverpool deal, and uncertainty over whether the Premier League club will offer an extension may create an opportunity for Galatasaray to test Liverpool’s resolve before the end of the season.
The Turkish side are said to be considering a transfer fee below €10 million, alongside an annual salary package of around €10 million for the defender. Any mid-season deal would still depend on Liverpool’s willingness to negotiate and Van Dijk’s own view of a move away from Anfield.
Galatasaray may also look to use personal connections to strengthen their case. Midfielder İlkay Gündoğan and Van Dijk are represented by the same agency, ROOF, where Gündoğan’s uncle is employed. The club hope that this connection could help discussions progress, although it does not guarantee an agreement.
The Dutchman has also spoken positively about the atmosphere at Rams Park, a factor Galatasaray may highlight as they try to persuade him. The club’s ambition, the prospect of a central role and the chance to compete for honours in Turkey could form part of their pitch.
Why Galatasaray want a defensive leader
The number of goals conceded points to a problem that goes beyond one position. A commanding centre-back can improve organisation, communication and decision-making across the defensive line, but a signing of Van Dijk’s profile would not automatically resolve every weakness. Galatasaray would also need consistent support from full-backs and midfielders to reduce the space opponents can exploit.
His experience could be particularly valuable in high-pressure matches. Van Dijk has spent years competing at the highest level, and his ability to direct teammates may help a defence that has struggled to remain compact. For Buruk, adding a recognisable leader could bring both immediate quality and greater confidence to the back line.
What could complicate a January transfer?
A winter move would involve several parties and difficult timing. Liverpool may be reluctant to lose their captain midway through the campaign, especially if they have not secured a replacement. Even with a relatively modest proposed fee, Galatasaray would need to convince the English club that letting Van Dijk leave would be acceptable.
The player’s preferences would be equally important. A substantial salary offer and an enthusiastic welcome in Istanbul may appeal, but Van Dijk would also have to weigh his role at Liverpool, the remaining length of his contract and his sporting ambitions. Until those questions are answered, Galatasaray’s interest should be viewed as a developing possibility rather than a completed deal.
What the move could mean for Galatasaray
If the club can reach an agreement, Van Dijk would arrive as a potential first-choice centre-back and a major addition to the squad’s leadership group. His arrival could also raise expectations among supporters and increase competition for places in defence.
Galatasaray’s immediate challenge is clear: improve their defensive record without disrupting the team’s balance. A high-profile signing might help, but recruitment at right-back and better coordination across the whole back four could be just as important. The January window will show whether the club can turn its interest in Van Dijk into a realistic offer-and whether Liverpool and the defender are open to a mid-season change.
