Okan Buruk Details Galatasaray’s Plan to Limit Lamine Yamal

Galatasaray coach Okan Buruk says his side has prepared a specific defensive approach for Barcelona winger Lamine Yamal ahead of their high-stakes UEFA Champions League meeting at RAMS Park on Tuesday. Speaking to Spanish media outlets Marca and Mundo Deportivo, Buruk recognised the young forward’s ability to change a match while stressing that Galatasaray will not allow him to operate without close attention.

Yamal has become a central figure in Hansi Flick’s attacking system, using his pace, close control and ability to create chances from the flank. Buruk described him as an exceptional talent capable of deciding games on his own, but emphasised that defending against Barcelona requires more than focusing on one player.

“We have prepared a specific double-coverage system on our left flank,” Buruk explained. The aim is to reduce the situations in which Yamal can face a defender one-on-one, while directing him towards areas where Galatasaray can provide additional support.

The plan is expected to rely on cooperation between left-back Ismaïl Jakobs and midfielder Lucas Torreira. Rather than assigning one player to follow Yamal across the pitch, Galatasaray intend to coordinate their movement and limit the space available to him near the touchline. If Barcelona try to bring the ball inside, Buruk’s players will look to meet the attack with a compact defensive block.

That approach is designed to make Yamal’s decisions harder without leaving the rest of Barcelona’s forward line unchecked. Double coverage can restrict a winger’s options, but it also demands discipline from the surrounding defenders: teammates must protect the spaces that become available when two players shift towards the ball.

Galatasaray do not intend to spend the evening defending deep, Buruk indicated. The coach said the team would retain its aggressive character and press in front of its home crowd at RAMS Park. The balance will be important: pressing too loosely could leave room for Barcelona to exploit, while dropping too far back could give Yamal time to receive the ball and build momentum.

The Turkish side also hope that a successful defensive stand can become the starting point for attacks of their own. By crowding Barcelona’s wide play and disrupting its rhythm, Galatasaray want to win possession and move forward quickly through Victor Osimhen and Leroy Sané. Their pace and threat in transition could force Barcelona’s defenders to retreat, offering the hosts a way to turn defensive pressure into scoring opportunities.

The plan will depend on timing as much as numbers. Jakobs and Torreira must close down Yamal together, while the rest of the team shifts across to prevent Barcelona from exploiting the space elsewhere. If one defender commits too early or the support arrives late, Yamal may still find the opening needed to deliver a cross, drive into the box or combine with a teammate.

Galatasaray will also need to remain alert when Barcelona switch the play. Concentrating extra attention on Yamal can leave the opposite side less protected, so the defensive line will have to move as a unit and avoid becoming stretched. Maintaining compact distances between the midfield and defence could help the hosts limit both direct passes into the winger and quick combinations around the edge of the penalty area.

For Barcelona, the challenge may be to create options beyond simply feeding Yamal in isolation. Quick exchanges, overlapping runs and movement into central areas could test Galatasaray’s coverage and create space elsewhere. The Turkish side, in turn, will look to prevent those supporting movements from drawing its defenders out of position.

Buruk’s message is that Galatasaray can respect Yamal’s influence without allowing the Barcelona winger to dictate the match. If the planned coverage works and the hosts press with discipline, they could disrupt Barcelona’s attacking flow and create chances on the counter. With an energetic crowd behind them at RAMS Park, Galatasaray will be aiming to turn that tactical balance into a memorable European result.
