Arda Turan Reaffirms Commitment to Shakhtar Donetsk and Rejects Türkiye Job Speculation

Arda Turan has said he intends to honour his commitment to Shakhtar Donetsk, despite being linked with the vacant Türkiye national team coaching position. The former international midfielder, now in charge of the Ukrainian club, made clear that he is not planning to leave his current role while the team’s project is underway.

Turan became a prominent name in Turkish media coverage after the Turkish Football Federation parted ways with Vincenzo Montella. But speaking ahead of Shakhtar’s European fixtures, he stressed that the timing of any potential move matters-and that he has given his word to the club’s leadership and players.

Turan puts his Shakhtar commitments first

The 39-year-old described being considered for the national team role as a major honour. Having represented Türkiye throughout his playing career, he said the interest was personally meaningful. Even so, he argued that appreciation for the opportunity does not outweigh his existing obligations.

Turan said he had made a commitment to Shakhtar president Rinat Akhmetov, the club and, above all, the players. Leaving before the current project is complete, he suggested, would betray the trust placed in him.

His remarks amount to a firm rejection of the speculation for now. Rather than weighing a move to the national side, Turan says his attention remains on managing Shakhtar and developing as a coach in European football.

A young coach focused on experience

Turan also framed his decision as part of his long-term development. He believes working with a club team day after day gives him the practical experience he needs at this stage of his managerial career.

He added that representing Türkiye does not require holding the national team job. In his view, building a reputation in European football and competing abroad can also be a way to carry the country’s flag. He referenced Fatih Terim’s work outside Türkiye as an example of the influence Turkish coaches can have on the European stage.

That perspective helps explain why Turan is not treating the national-team vacancy as an immediate next step. A coaching role with a national side brings prestige, but club management offers regular training, match preparation and the chance to shape a team over a full season.

Shakhtar’s results strengthen his position

Turan’s decision comes after an impressive first campaign at Shakhtar. He guided the club to the Ukrainian Premier League title and led the team to the semi-finals of a European competition. Those achievements have raised his profile and provided a platform for further growth.

Remaining in place would allow him to build on that progress rather than begin a new project midway through its development. It also gives Shakhtar continuity as the club pursues domestic and European ambitions.

For the Turkish Football Federation, Turan’s comments mean the search for Montella’s successor is likely to continue with other candidates under consideration. The federation faces the task of appointing a coach capable of preparing the national side for its upcoming international fixtures.

Why Turan’s choice matters

The decision highlights a familiar challenge in football management: balancing career opportunities with professional commitments. A national team position can be one of the most prestigious jobs available to a coach, but taking it often means leaving behind a club project that may be gaining momentum.

For Shakhtar, Turan’s statement offers reassurance that the manager remains focused on the team. For Türkiye, his response clarifies that admiration for the national side does not necessarily translate into immediate availability.

Turan has not ruled out the possibility of coaching the national team at some point in the future. Instead, his message is about timing. He wants to continue improving through daily work in Europe and to honour the commitments he has already made before considering a different role.

For now, his priorities are clear: lead Shakhtar, develop as a coach and prove himself on the European stage.
