Galatasaray Make €18 Million Opening Bid for Tottenham Midfielder Pape Matar Sarr
Galatasaray have formally entered the race for Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Pape Matar Sarr, submitting an opening offer worth €18 million. The proposal has been rejected by the Premier League club, which is believed to value the Senegal international at no less than €25 million.
Negotiations between the two sides remain active, with Galatasaray attempting to reduce the financial gap and Tottenham assessing whether a sale would make sense during the current transfer window.
Okan Buruk Identifies Sarr as a Midfield Priority
Galatasaray head coach Okan Buruk has reportedly made Sarr one of his main targets for the centre of midfield. The manager is looking to add greater athleticism, defensive intensity and forward-running ability to his squad.
Sarr’s profile fits the type of midfielder Buruk wants to introduce into the team. The 23-year-old can cover large areas of the pitch, support the press, recover possession and carry the ball through midfield during quick attacking transitions.
The Turkish champions believe his physical strength and tactical flexibility would complement Gabriel Sara particularly well. Sarr could operate as a deeper midfielder, play in a more advanced box-to-box role or provide additional protection when Galatasaray’s full-backs push forward.
Tottenham Demand a Higher Transfer Fee
Tottenham have rejected the initial €18 million proposal and are reportedly seeking at least €25 million before considering Sarr’s departure. The difference between the two valuations is currently the main obstacle in the negotiations.
Spurs have invested significantly in their midfield department, including the reported arrivals of Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes. That increased competition could affect Sarr’s position in the squad and may make a transfer more realistic if Tottenham receive an offer close to their asking price.
From the London club’s perspective, selling the midfielder would also allow them to recover part of the money spent on strengthening the team. However, Tottenham are unlikely to accept a fee that they consider below Sarr’s sporting and financial value.
Galatasaray Offer a Leading Role in Istanbul
Although the clubs have not yet reached an agreement, Galatasaray are believed to have made considerable progress in discussions with Sarr’s representatives. The Turkish side can offer the midfielder a more prominent role and a stronger guarantee of regular first-team football.
Senegal teammate Ismail Jakobs has reportedly helped promote the Galatasaray project. His presence could give Sarr additional confidence as he considers a move away from English football and evaluates the opportunity to play a central role in Istanbul.
For Galatasaray, attracting a player of Sarr’s age and experience would represent a major investment in the club’s midfield future. The player is still only 23, meaning a successful spell in the Süper Lig could deliver both immediate sporting benefits and potential long-term resale value.
How Sarr Could Fit Galatasaray’s System
Sarr’s versatility is one of the main reasons he has become an attractive option for Buruk. He is capable of contributing in both phases of the game rather than functioning solely as a defensive midfielder or a creative playmaker.
His ability to win challenges and cover space could give Galatasaray more balance when attacking. At the same time, his pressing strength would allow the team to regain possession higher up the pitch and launch faster transitions.
Playing alongside Gabriel Sara could give Galatasaray a midfield pairing with complementary qualities. Sara can provide distribution and attacking creativity, while Sarr would add running power, defensive work and physical presence.
The Senegalese midfielder could also be used in a three-man midfield, especially in matches where Galatasaray need greater control in the centre of the pitch. His mobility would allow him to move between defensive and attacking zones without leaving the team exposed.
Deadline Pressure Could Influence the Deal
With the transfer deadline approaching, both clubs face a decision over whether to compromise. Galatasaray must determine how far they are prepared to increase their offer, while Tottenham need to decide whether retaining Sarr is more valuable than accepting a substantial transfer fee.
The Turkish club’s first proposal indicates that it has already established a serious interest rather than simply making an exploratory approach. A revised offer could be submitted if negotiations with the player continue to progress.
Tottenham, meanwhile, may demand performance-related bonuses, a sell-on percentage or other financial conditions to bridge the gap between the two valuations. Such terms could allow Galatasaray to keep the guaranteed fee lower while giving Spurs the possibility of earning more in the future.
A Move That Could Benefit Both Parties
The potential transfer offers advantages to both Sarr and the two clubs. Galatasaray would strengthen an important area of the squad with a young, physically imposing midfielder. Tottenham would receive funds for a player facing increased competition after their midfield rebuild.
For Sarr, a move to Istanbul could provide the regular playing time that may be harder to secure in North London. Consistent starts would allow him to develop further, take on greater responsibility and remain prominent at international level with Senegal.
Galatasaray are therefore expected to continue discussions with Tottenham. The initial €18 million offer has not been enough to complete the deal, but negotiations remain open and a financial compromise could still be reached before the window closes.
