Galatasaray Beat Lille 4-2 in a Statement Champions League Away Win
Galatasaray claimed their first victory in the UEFA Champions League league phase with a dramatic 4-2 win over LOSC Lille at the Decathlon Arena – Stade Pierre-Mauroy on Wednesday. In a fast-moving contest marked by six goals and several momentum shifts, Okan Buruk’s team made the most of their attacking opportunities to take three important points on the road.
The visitors struck almost immediately. Yunus Akgün opened the scoring in the second minute, completing a quick transition before Lille had settled into the game. The early goal set the tone for an open first half, with both sides finding space and pushing forward.
Lille responded five minutes later. Soriba Diaoune took advantage of gaps in Galatasaray’s central defence to level the score in the seventh minute, then found the net again in the 39th to put the French side ahead. For a spell, the hosts appeared to have turned Galatasaray’s bright start into a difficult away challenge.
Galatasaray restored parity just before half-time. Aleksey Batrakov finished a late first-half move in the 44th minute, bringing the score to 2-2 and giving the visitors a timely lift before the break. His equaliser ensured the teams went into half-time level after an unusually eventful opening period.
The decisive phase came after the restart. In the 52nd minute, Nabil Bentaleb accidentally turned a low delivery into his own net, handing Galatasaray the lead. Victor Osimhen then extended the advantage in the 61st minute, finishing from close range to make it 4-2.
That two-goal cushion proved enough. Galatasaray managed the closing stages and held on to secure a significant away result, despite Lille’s earlier ability to exploit defensive openings. The victory gives Buruk’s side a welcome boost after dropping points in their opening Champions League fixtures and strengthens their position in the league-phase standings.
Pace and directness proved decisive
Galatasaray’s attacking approach was particularly effective when the team could move the ball forward quickly. Rather than allowing Lille time to organise, the visitors looked for direct routes through the middle and sought to turn defensive recoveries into immediate attacking situations. Akgün’s early goal was a clear example of how quickly that strategy could pay off.
Batrakov’s contribution helped Galatasaray regain control at a crucial moment. His equaliser came just before the interval, when Lille might otherwise have carried a lead into the break. Restoring the balance gave the visitors a chance to reset and approach the second half with renewed confidence.
Osimhen also played an important part in unsettling Lille’s defence. His presence in the central areas occupied the home side’s centre-backs and created a focal point for Galatasaray’s forward play. The striker’s close-range finish made the scoreline more comfortable and rewarded the pressure the visitors had built after taking the lead again.
A result with value beyond the scoreline
The win offers more than three points. A successful performance away from home can provide a valuable lift in a demanding European campaign, especially after a difficult start to the league phase. Galatasaray will be encouraged by their ability to respond when Lille moved ahead and to regain the advantage after half-time.
There are still defensive lessons for Buruk’s side. Lille scored twice before the break after finding space through the middle, and those moments showed how quickly an opponent can punish lapses in shape. Addressing that vulnerability will be important in future Champions League matches, where sustained pressure can make small errors costly.
For Lille, the defeat will be frustrating after twice recovering from a setback and briefly taking the lead. Their attacking play created problems, but the own goal and Osimhen’s finish left them with too much to overcome. Galatasaray, by contrast, leave northern France with a statement victory built on quick transitions, resilience and clinical finishing.
