Victor Osimhen Set to Return as Galatasaray Prepare for Trabzonspor Test
Galatasaray have received a major boost before Saturday’s crucial Süper Lig meeting with Trabzonspor. Victor Osimhen has recovered sufficiently from a muscle problem and is expected to rejoin the squad for the demanding away fixture at Papara Park.
The Nigerian forward was unavailable for Galatasaray’s most recent league match against Kocaelispor after suffering the injury during the team’s 3-2 victory over İstanbul Başakşehir. His absence was immediately noticeable, as the reigning contenders had to rely on a more conservative attacking setup.
Osimhen has responded well to treatment and has produced encouraging results during late fitness examinations. The club’s medical team has therefore approved his return to first-team training, although his final role against Trabzonspor will depend on his condition during the next two days.
Buruk Faces an Important Selection Decision
Okan Buruk will now have to decide whether Osimhen is ready to start or whether it would be safer to introduce him gradually from the substitutes’ bench. The striker’s fitness will be assessed during training, with particular attention paid to his movement, acceleration and ability to withstand physical challenges.
The timing of his return is especially important. Galatasaray narrowly defeated Kocaelispor 1-0, with Abdülkerim Bardakcı producing a spectacular 71st-minute strike to settle the contest. Despite securing the points, the team lacked its usual attacking sharpness and struggled to create consistent danger in the final third.
Osimhen’s presence would immediately change that dynamic. His pace allows Galatasaray to threaten space behind opposing defenders, while his strength gives the team a reliable option when building attacks under pressure. He can also occupy multiple defenders, creating additional room for Galatasaray’s attacking midfielders and wide players.
A Difficult Challenge on the Black Sea Coast
Galatasaray currently sit level with Beşiktaş at the top of the Süper Lig standings, with both teams on 13 points. Maintaining an unbeaten domestic record will be a priority, but the trip to Trabzon represents one of the most difficult tests of the early campaign.
Trabzonspor have made an inconsistent start and dropped to ninth place after a 1-0 defeat against Konyaspor. Nevertheless, their position in the table does not fully reflect the danger they pose at home. The Black Sea club traditionally performs with greater intensity in front of its own supporters, and Galatasaray can expect a highly physical and emotionally charged contest.
The home side also possesses considerable attacking quality, with Mohamed Salah expected to lead the line. Trabzonspor’s forwards will attempt to exploit any gaps behind Galatasaray’s defence, particularly if Buruk commits several players forward in search of an early goal.
Osimhen’s Role Could Decide the Match
If Osimhen is cleared to start, Galatasaray will regain the focal point that was missing against Kocaelispor. His ability to press defenders, compete for aerial balls and finish quickly inside the penalty area makes him one of the most influential players in the league.
However, Buruk may choose to manage his minutes carefully. A muscle injury can easily worsen if a player returns too soon, especially in a match likely to be played at a high tempo. Galatasaray will not want to risk losing Osimhen for a longer period simply to use him for the full 90 minutes in Trabzon.
A substitute appearance could therefore be a practical compromise. Osimhen could enter during the second half when defenders are tired, allowing him to use his speed against a stretched defence while reducing the physical burden of an immediate full match.
His return also improves Galatasaray’s tactical flexibility. The team can switch between patient possession and direct counterattacking football, depending on how Trabzonspor approach the game. Osimhen’s runs behind the defensive line may force the hosts to defend deeper, which would give Galatasaray more control in midfield.
Galatasaray Gain Psychological Confidence
Beyond his technical contribution, Osimhen’s inclusion would provide a significant psychological lift. Opponents must constantly account for his positioning, even when he is not directly involved in the play. His reputation alone can influence defensive decisions and create uncertainty in the opposing back line.
For Galatasaray, the striker’s return also strengthens squad confidence. The narrow win over Kocaelispor demonstrated that the team can collect points without its main attacking star, but the upcoming fixture demands greater efficiency and creativity. Having Osimhen available gives the squad another proven solution.
The medical staff will continue monitoring him closely before the match. His participation in team training, reaction to increased workload and comfort during high-intensity drills will all influence the final decision.
Galatasaray’s priority will be to leave Papara Park with a result while preserving Osimhen’s long-term fitness. Whether he starts or comes on later, his return gives Okan Buruk a powerful attacking weapon and could prove decisive in one of the most anticipated fixtures of the weekend.
